Why This Test Matters
Most business owners have checked their Google rankings. Almost none have checked their AI search visibility. That gap is significant — an increasing share of service-related queries now goes directly to AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, bypassing Google’s traditional results entirely.
The test below takes five minutes and requires no tools or subscriptions. It will show you the most important visibility metric most businesses have never measured: whether AI platforms recommend you when potential customers ask about your services.
Step 1: Test ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT at chat.openai.com. You do not need a paid account for this test. Ask the types of questions your potential customers would ask. Good test queries follow this structure:
- “Who are the best [your service type] in [your city or region]?”
- “Can you recommend a [your profession] in [your state]?”
- “What should I look for in a [your service category] and who do you recommend?”
- “I need a [your service] near [your city]. What are my options?”
Read the response carefully. Does your business name appear? Is it described accurately? Does ChatGPT include your website, specialty, or location? If absent or inaccurately described, that is an AEO gap.
Step 2: Test Google AI Overviews
Open Google and search the same types of queries. Look for the AI-generated summary box that appears above traditional results. If your business is named, you have AI Overview visibility. If not, you are absent from the highest-visibility position on the page.
Step 3: Test Perplexity
Go to perplexity.ai and ask similar questions. Perplexity cites its sources directly in every answer. You can see exactly which websites it used to generate its response. If competitor websites are cited and yours is not, that tells you something specific about your content structure and authority signals.
Step 4: Test Voice Search
On your phone, activate Siri or Google Assistant and ask: “Who is the best [your service] near me?” Voice search returns a single spoken answer, not a list. That answer is either your business or someone else’s.
The self-test gives you a directional picture. A professional AEO audit goes deeper — testing dozens of query variations, reviewing your structured data code, assessing entity signals, and benchmarking your AI visibility against competitors in your category.
What to Do With What You Find
If you appear consistently and accurately: document your current schema and entity setup as a baseline. Visibility can erode as competitors optimize.
If you appear sometimes but inaccurately: your entity signals are inconsistent. AI platforms are guessing what your business does and getting it wrong. Schema markup and entity clarity work will fix this.
If you do not appear at all: you have no AEO infrastructure. The free audit will identify all the specific gaps and prioritize the highest-ROI fixes.
